Mission Statement - The Mission of the Kenter Canyon Elementary School Library Media Center is to develop avid readers who are also information literate students on the way to becoming life long learners. The LMC contains a diverse collection of materials including approximately 9000 books, periodicals, instructional sources and classroom videos. We serve the students, teachers and parents as a support to both the schools curriculum and the childrens individual needs and interests.

Welcome to the beautiful Kenter Canyon Library Media Center. All classes visit the LMC weekly. During their visits, the librarian  instructs the children on a variety of library research skills and how to use various reference sources. Time spent during library enrichment includes, discussions on different literary genres, storytelling and reading. Often, material covered coordinates with the students curriculum or upcoming holidays.

The students are additionally welcome to come in on their own during the morning nutrition break, during lunchtime if a volunteer is available, and after school to do homework quietly.  Students are allowed to borrow books for two weeks.  We encourage children to be responsible in their choice of appropriate materials by using the five-finger rule* in their book selection process to insure a successful and enjoyable reading experience.

Parents are also welcome to use the library resources.  The librarian is available to assist you with, recommending appropriate titles, providing materials,  and bibliographies and booklists upon request.

*Five-Finger Rule
Beginning readers can use the five-finger test to check the  reading level of a book:

  • Open the book you are considering reading in the middle.Select a full page of text.
  • Read the page (aloud if possible.)
  • Put one finger up for every word you cannot pronounce or do not know.
  • If you have five (5) fingers up on one page, the book is too difficult to read independently.
  • If you dont have any fingers up, but are reading very slowly and decoding almost every word, you will not enjoy this book.
  • If you need a suggestion for a book that you can read, ask the librarian or aide.

Adopt-a-Book Program Information
Our Library offers a program that provides pre-selected quality books for the school community to adopt into the LMC collection. A special label will be placed in the book of your choice with your message. Some occasions to select a book could be, in honor of your childs birthday, thanking your childs teacher, in memory of someone or for any reason you can think of! If you have further questions about this program, please stop by the library. All book donations are tax deductible.
