Pedestrian Safety Alert!
The Los Angeles Unified School District Office of Environmental Health and Safety has issued the attached bulletin to all parents within the boundaries of LAUSD.
Please remember to encourage your children to cross at designated crosswalks and always look both ways before crossing. Also, please protect the safety of your children by not beckoning them to cross at non-designated places to get to your car.
Kenter volunteers continue to see parents park on Homewood and walk students to the South Yard---or even have them to walk between the valet parking program to access the South Yard gates.
Our Valet Parking Program was established by OEHS, School Police, and LAPD. It was not created by Kenter parents. Parking on Homewood and walking across the street or letting your children out of the car on that side of the street is unsafe and a violation of the program. Violatators will be reported to LAPD if your practice continues. Traffic volunteers have continually warned parents to not drop off on the south side of Homewood.
Additionally, drivers who drop off at Elkins have disregarded many safety rules to the point that LAPD has expressed concern and informed us that if violations continue, the Elkins Gate will be locked and the curbs will be painted red.
Parents need to reflect on their driving practices and ask yourself if you are serving as a role model for our students. Are your parking habits legal and safe? We know about the fatality of a young girl in our neighborhood last spring. We know about the athlete who was recently hit by a driver on the telephone. Let's exercise caution so the next child hit by a car is not one of ours or yours.
We are grateful to the parents who take time to help with our traffic program. We are grateful to the parents who use drop-off valet program accurately and appropriately. We are grateful to the parents who watch out for other students walking or biking to school. All of us have concerns for the few that fail to exercise such caution and fail to adhere to signs and parking laws.
